Larry’s talk will discuss AI Slop, what it is, describe the difficulties we have in identifying AI Slop, and explore ways to manage AI Slop.

ChatGPT’s was released November 30, 2022. Since then, ChatGPT and similar Generative AI Models like Claude and Gemini have enabled users to quickly produce high quality output using simple prompts.

Although most Generative AI output is of a high quality, I have found that they often produce more output than needed. The models also tend to flatter the user. As a result, the users produce more output which means more revenue for the AI companies.

Generative AI models can also produce misinformation. In some cases, this is due to inexperienced users or is a result of the models trying to elicit click-throughs from the user which can then be monetized. In other cases, misinformation is produced by bad actors for nefarious purposes.

Today we are getting more AI generated output than we can digest. It is also getting harder to know which AI output is good and which is bad. This situation is becoming known as AI Slop.

Presenter: Larry Dribin, Ph.D.

Dr. Larry Dribin is a retired consultant and educator.

As a consultant, Larry worked as a Vice President and Director in Cap Gemini’s IT Excellence Practice (IT^X). Later he started his own consulting company, the Pearl Street Group (PSG), which provided process improvement, measurement, and project management services.

Larry worked with small startups as well as large Fortune 500 companies in a wide variety of industries. His focus was to help clients implement new technologies, turn around failing projects and comply with government regulations.

As an educator, Larry worked for over 40 years as an adjunct instructor in DePaul University of Chicago’s College of Computers & Digital Media (CDM). At DePaul he taught courses in Data Analysis, Software Engineering, Software Measurement & Process Improvement, Agile & Object-Oriented Development, Cloud Computing and most recently Artificial Intelligence.

Larry holds a Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, an MBA in Marketing, and a BS in Industrial Engineering.

Currently Larry is researching Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models, how they work and how to best regulate them.
